Beach Tennis is no longer a sport that requires discipline in order to play. Now days, you don’t really need any skills, but you do need to have the desire have fun surrounded by music, beautiful white sand Aruba beaches, and of at least 1,500 players that fly in from countries such as Russia, Czeck Republic, Venezuela, Greece and Brazil.

To visit the beautiful Caribbean island is no longer about enjoying crystal clear waters, but also the sand covered tennis courts. Since 2002 Beach Tennis Aruba is the most popular sports event on the island. Thus, the reason why each November Aruba gets ready to host delegations from all over the world, including Japan, Australia, in addition to the three thousand people who attend the bleachers of Moomba Beach Bar at the Tropicana Resort, to accompany contestants from 60 countries.

For many, this sport has become a lifestyle due to its energy, simplicity and fun. Surfers, athletes, skaters, ping-pong and volleyball lovers, have dared to challenge the actual players. Jochem Ross and Sjoerd de Vries, considered the best beach tennis players from the Caribbean island, are the directors and founders of this fast growing event that increasingly demands more effort and logistic requirements.

The sport is quite simple but is still evolving. According to Ross, there is no need for lessons in order to reach perfection. The game is played in a Volleyball court with the designated racquet, similar to a paddle. It can be played in singles or doubles. The goal of the game is to get the ball over the net without touching the ground. The ball is similar to a tennis ball but with less pressure.

“The clothing worn should be lightweight; playing the game is like being on the beach with a party going on. Both in daily training and in tournaments, music blasts as in a festival”. The International Beach Tennis Championship of Aruba, was named as the best international tournament by the Italian Beach Tennis Association, the country where this sport got started. The ages of participants that visit the island are between five and seventy years old.
Beach tennis is quickly gaining strength. “We are like a big family that continues to grow, and that we see one another a couple times a year”.

The sport has gained the recognition of the International Tennis Federation. This has helped it expand all over the world, and also make way for the possibility of its inclusion into the Olympic Games. “The event has grown very fast; our goal is to take it to the Olympics”

This year International Beach Tennis Tournament is in Eagle Beach on November 15-22. For the first time the event will go a full week. Every year the winners receive a prize, and this one will be no different. There will be one prize for each category, between $500 to $2,500. All the competitions will end with a party in the water. Registration can be done online accessing the website www.beachtennisaruba.com.

Beach Tennis Aruba
